Understanding the 100% inspection requirements for the printing industry

This article describes in detail the different requirements of the printing industry according to operational sector, customer and printing process.

Segmenting the print inspection industry

The packaging industry is commonly split into three distinct disciplines. Rarely do you see plants encompass more than one of the following products types.

Segmenting the print industry

  • Folding carton (Web and Sheet fed).
  • Flexible Packaging.
  • Tag & Label.

However to understand the need for each customer, you need to also add a second level of segmentation. This can be extended to the major end market that packaging operation supplies.

The following are the dominant categories:

  • Tobacco.
  • Pharmaceutical & Cosmetics.
  • Food.
  • Security.

The sector and the printer supplies may determine the driving requirements, but not the problems that the customer wants to solve. These are normally as a result of the process or technology used.  One operation may use a multiple of technologies but again normally one process is preferred.

These technologies are as follows:

  • Gravure (Web fed)
  • Flexographic (CI and Inline )
  • Offset (Sheet and web fed )

Mapping the application

  • Segments a group of customers with common needs.
  • Provides marketing a clear focus on how to generate leads.
  • Provides focus to how marketing communication tools should be used.
  • Clearly determines product roadmap and evolutionary requirements.

Understanding that the packaging market breaks down along the followings lines:

  • Folding carton (Sheet and web fed).
  • Flexible Packaging.
  • Tag & Label.

We then must break these sectors down according to application and process. The sectors they serve will determine the order of precedence.

Segmentation versus Fit

To succeed in each sector, a print inspection supplier must address the issues that the printers experience that are barriers to them meeting the market requirements that they face. Each sector is broken down into the type of technology used to deliver the product to the market place. By identifying all the possible issues that a process can produce when delivering to a particular market, by understanding the cost or savings if each issue is identified, the marketing effort can identify the appropriate product roadmap to follow, and the immediate sectors and applications that can deliver the speediest returns.

Note that each sector is further categorized into three sections.

  • On line quality issues.
  • Process control or procedural issues.
  • Converting issues – those final stages before delivery.

Only by analyzing the complete process used in each sector, can a comprehensive solution be offered.

Conclusion

So the following are the key conclusions and do in fact determine the make-up of the market:

  • The market being supplied determines the driving factors and thus the requirements.
  • The technology being used creates the process issues that need to be addressed so as to meet the requirements presented by the end user sector.
  • The product supplied to address the process issue, maybe specifically or not, but there are two benefits to describe to the printer:
    • The process problem being addressed.
    • How that translates into a customer requirement being addressed.
